Richard Wright a founding member of Pink Floyd died today after a battle with cancer at age 65. Wright was one of the original members of Pink Floyd along with Gilmore, Mason and Syd Barret. Their first album was a 1967 hit called “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”
Based out of London, Pink Floyd became a favorite of the psychedelic hippie generation. Richard Wright met the other members in college and formed a band called “Sigma 6″ and later it morphed into Pink Floyd.
Richard Wright stayed with the band and enjoyed it’s successes up until “The Wall” came out in 1979. It was during the recording of “The Wall” that Roger Waters, the singer who replaced Syd Barrett fired Richard Wright. He insisted on it and this brought band tensions to a boiling point. Guilmore and Richard Wright on one side and Waters on the other side.
Richard Write was given a demotion and only allow to play on the tour as a session musician. Pink Floyd broke up after the Final Cut was released (Richard Wright did not play on The Final Cut) and each of the member went seperate ways although Richard Wright worked with Guilmore on a couple more Pink Floyd albums.
Richard Wright died of cancer in his home in Britain.
